No. 8 Virginia Opens With a Win at No. 6 Loyola

BALTIMORE, Md. – The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team opened the 2013 campaign with a 10-9 victory at No. 6 Loyola.
Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.), a transfer from Northwestern playing in her first game with the Cavaliers, scored three goals with an assist. Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y.) scored two goals with two assists.
Dana Boyle (Jr., Londonberry, N.H.) scored the game-winner with 5:29 left in the game.
“It was a pretty exciting first game for both programs,” said head coach Julie Myers. “I think both teams came out hungry and excited to start the season. There were lots of scrambling and hustle plays. It got pretty ugly at times, but I thought we made some big plays when we needed to. We created just enough opportunities to come away with the win.”
The two teams got the season off to a quick start, combining to score three goals in the first three minutes.
After Loyola took a 1-0 lead on its first possession, co-captain Caroline McTiernan (Sr., Garden City, N.Y.) scored the equalizer on a free position shot with 27:31 left in the fist half. Thirty seconds later, Loyola went back up, 2-1.
Boyle tied the game, 2-2, bouncing in a shot from the right side with 17:52 remaining. Thirty-six seconds later, Loyola retook the lead, scoring its third goal on its fourth shot of the game.
After a Virginia missed shot, Bocklet picked up a ground ball and smashed it into the goal to tie the game, 3-3, with 14:49 remaining.
Loyola scored a pair of goals, including netting one while a man-down, to take a 5-3 lead. Warner, scoring the first of her two goals, faked out a defender, getting past her for a shot into the goal to make it 5-4 with 4:28 left in the first half first half.
Virginia had an opportunity to tie the game right before the break when Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) had a free position shot with 0.3 seconds left in the first half, but Loyola freshman goalkeeper Molly Wolf made her sixth save of the period.
Twenty-six seconds into the second half, Bocklet tied the game, 5-5, taking a feed from Warner and scoring.
Bocklet gave the Cavaliers their first lead of the game, 6-5, after faking out the goalie to shoot the ball into an open net with 27:52 left in the game.
Warner and Swan connected for a pair of goals to put Virginia up 8-5, with Warner feeding to Swan on the first and Swan giving an assist to Warner on the second.
After Loyola scored a pair of goals, Morgan Stephens (Olney, Md.) showed off some strong footwork, coming from behind the goal to pop the ball into the net, giving Virginia a 9-7 lead with 15:20 remaining.
After winning the draw control right after the Greyhounds had scored a man-up goal, Loyola passed the ball down the field on two long passes, taking a shot and tying the game, 9-9, ten seconds after their previous goal.
With 5:29 left in the game, Bocklet found Boyle just outside the crease. Boyle gave a head-bob fake, shooting and scoring to put the Cavaliers a 10-9 advantage.The Cavaliers controlled the ball and the pace of the game for the final five minutes, holding on to take the season opener.
Virginia had 32 shots, to Loyola’s 21 with Wolf logging 11 saves for the Greyhounds. Kim Kolarik (Sr., Riva, Md.) had six saves for the Cavaliers. Virginia won 14 draw controls to Loyola’s seven.
Virginia will be on the road at Richmond on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. The Cavaliers’ first home game will be on Friday, March 1 when they host No. 4 Maryland at Klöckner Stadium. Single-game tickets are on sale now.
