CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (1-0) takes on in-state rival Richmond (0-3) on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 5 p.m. at Robins Stadium in Richmond, Va.
Virginia has dominated the all-time series, 32-3-1, and has only lost twice in Richmond (13-2-1). The last victory by the Spiders in their home stadium was an 8-7 upset in 2006.
Two years ago, when the two teams played in Richmond, Virginia earned a 23-12 victory. Last season in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers won 12-9.
Richmond is playing its fourth-consecutive top-10 ranked team after falling to No. 4 Maryland (20-7), No. 7 Duke (18-10) and No. 5 North Carolina (14-7). Senior Sam Stevenson leads the Richmond offense with 13 points (8g, 5a). Stevenson is followed by redshirt senior Caitlin Fifield who has recorded nine points (5g, 4a) this season. Both Stevenson and Fifield rank in the top-10 on Richmond’s all-time scoring list.
Virginia is coming off a 10-9 victory at No. 6 Loyola. The Virginia attack had six different players scoring goals with Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.) getting a hat trick in her first game as a Cavalier. Bocklet took four shots, all on goal, with three going into the net.
Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning N.Y.), who appeared in one game as a sophomore and two as a freshman, scored the first two goals of her career and also had a pair of assists.
Dana Boyle (Jr., Londonderry, N.H.), who did not play in 2012, returned to action by coming off the bench to score a pair of goals, including the game-winner. She took seven shots, including four on goal.
Midfielder Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) played in seven games last season, getting seven ground balls and winning eight draw controls during the 2012 campaign. She nearly matched her 2012 draw control season total at Loyola, winning six. She also had two ground balls and caused two turnovers.
Goalkeeper Kim Kolarik (Sr., Riva, Md.) had a strong second half, logging five saves in the final 30 minutes. Kolarik, who finished 2012 with a 10-7 record, played the entire game to earn her first win of the year.
Virginia is ranked No. 8 in the preseason IWLCA Coaches’ Poll. The first in-season poll will be released on Monday, Feb. 25. The Cavaliers are ranked No. 11 in the preseason deBeer Media Poll.
Syracuse, ranked No. 2 in the preseason IWLCA poll, will host the Cavaliers on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 1 p.m. It will be the second of five preseason top-10 ranked teams that the Cavaliers will play in their first six games of the season.The Cavaliers’ first home game will be on Friday, March 1 when they host No. 4 Maryland at Klöckner Stadium.
