CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team travels to the West Coast this weekend to compete in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic Thursday-Saturday (Feb. 21-23) in Palm Springs, Calif.
The Cavaliers (4-4) will face No. 16 Washington (6-5) and San Diego State (6-4) on Thursday at 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., No. 9 Oregon (8-3) on Friday at 11 p.m., and Colorado State (6-4) and No. 20 Stanford (10-2) on Saturday at 8 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. All times are Eastern.
UVa went 2-3 last weekend at the Purple and Gold Challenge in Baton Rouge, La. The Cavaliers defeated Memphis and Nicholls State, but fell to LSU twice and North Dakota State.
Sophomore Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) holds a six-game hitting streak going into the weekend, hitting .292 with four stolen bases. Junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) leads the squad with a .300 batting average, while senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) has a 3-1 record with a 0.47 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 30 innings of work.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend for a five-game tournament at Winthrop March 1-3 in Rock Hill, S.C.
UVa’s postponed game against George Washington from earlier in the year has been rescheduled for March 20 at 6 p.m. at The Park in Charlotteville.
