Cavaliers Continue Action on Day Two of ACC Indoor Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams continued action Friday at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Virginia Tech at Rector Field House. At the end of day two, the Cavalier men are in sixth place with 13 points through six events and the women are tied for 10th place through seven events.
“We had some individuals who haven’t been in this situation before really step up,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “We had some young kids who did some things that were real positives. They have some opportunities tomorrow in the finals to produce some results. To use a track metaphor, this is a marathon, not a sprint. We talked about the goal being to get better every day and it is still an ongoing process.”
The day concluded with the men’s distance medley relay of Anthony Kostelac, Payton Hazzard, Brandon Burton and Taylor Gilland finishing second in 9:45.70, the sixth fastest time in school history. They were edged by Virginia Tech by less than a half a second.
“It was a great run in the DMR,” said assistant coach Pete Watson. “Taylor Gilland ran an incredible anchor leg. He and the guy from Virginia Tech were neck and neck for the last five meters. Relays like that bring the team together. It was a total team effort and to come that close to pulling out the win shows how well our guys ran today.”
Also scoring points for the Cavalier men was Christian Lavorgna, who finished sixth in the heptathlon with 4,918 points, the third best score in school history.
Barbara Strehler finished fifth in the women’s 5000m in a PR of 16:28.88, the sixth fastest indoor time in school history.
The Cavaliers had six women and three men advance to Saturday’s finals. Jordan Lavender reached the final of the women’s 400m with a time of 54.11, her indoor PR and the second fastest indoor 400m in school history. Peyton Chaney ran a pair of PRs, going 7.65 in the 60m to advance to the final and running 24.43 in the 200m to advance. She is joined in the 200m final by Danielle Williams, who ran a season-best 24.54. Vicky Fouhy won heat No. 1 of the women’s mile to advance to the final and Colette Gnade reached the final of the women’s 800m with a time of 2:09.80, the seventh fastest in school history.
On the men’s side, Gilland and Kostelac advanced to the final of the mile, while Hazzard advanced to the final of the 400m.
