Lavender Sets 400m School Record on Final Day of ACC Indoor Championships

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams each finished in seventh place as the 2013 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships concluded at Virginia Tech’s Rector Field House on Saturday. Jordan Lavender highlighted the final day for the Cavaliers as she shattered the school record in the 400m.
“We didn’t bring many swords to the fight, but the ones we did cut pretty well,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “It was a good effort for the Wahoos. We had a lot of individuals step up with their personal bests this weekend.”
Lavender set the school record in the women’s 400m with a time of 53.14, breaking the previous record of Lisa Garrett of 54.07 set in 1981 by almost a second. She finished second behind in the event to two-time ACC Indoor 400m champion and 2012 Olympian Marlena Wesh of Clemson.
In addition to Lavender, the women’s team had five other competitors in Saturday’s finals who had advanced during Friday’s qualifying heats. In the first track event of the day, Vicky Fouhy was second in the women’s mile. Peyton Chaney was in two finals, running a PR of 7.60 to finish seventh in the 60m, and a PR of 24.31 in the 200m to finish sixth. Chaney was joined in the 200m final by Danielle Williams, who finished seventh at 24.54. In addition, Colette Gnade was seventh in the 800m final.
Also scoring for the Cavaliers was Barbara Strehler, who ran a PR of 9:30.77, the eighth fastest time in school history, to finish eighth. She edged Kathleen Stevens, who ran 9:30.84, her PR and the ninth fastest time in school history.
The Cavaliers picked up a pair of third place finishes in the triple jump. Dallas Rose placed third in the women’s triple jump with 42’6.75″ on her last attempt, just .25″ shy of her PR. Ryan Satchell was third in the men’s triple jump at 50’6.25″.
Payton Hazzard took fourth place in the men’s 400m with a time of 47.43. Virginia had two men qualify for the final of the men’s mile with Taylor Gilland finishing fourth and Anthony Kostelac finishing ninth. Matthew Armentrout placed seventh in the men’s pole vault at 16’5.25″, the fourth best indoor mark in school history and topping his previous PR by eight inches. Bryan Lewis finished seventh in the men’s 3000m with a time of 8:15.16.
The day concluded with the both 4×400 relays finishing fourth. The women’s 4×400 team of Chaney, Gnade, Lavender and Natalia Kuhn finished at 3:42.02, while the men’s 4×400 team of Ozzie Bryan, Cody Snyder, Brandon Burton and Hazzard finished at 3:15.06.
“We had a lot of upperclassmen step up for us in this meet,” said Fetzer. “For seniors like Matt Armentrout, Vicky Fouhy, Dallas Rose and Danielle Williams all score for us in this meet was a great way for them to wrap up their indoor careers.”
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend as athletes will compete at three events. Virginia will send athletes to the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame, the Columbia Last Chance Meet in New York and the Virginia Tech Final Qualifier in Blacksburg.
