CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 39 Memphis topped No. 16 Virginia, 5-2, in women’s tennis action Sunday afternoon at The University Club in Memphis.

The Tigers claimed five singles wins in the match, improving their record to 6-2. The Cavaliers, who fell to 2-4, swept the doubles point for the second consecutive match and freshman Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) earned a win at No. 2 singles.

Virginia started fast as No. 17 Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Nauta defeated Courtney Collins and Liza Tymchenko 8-3 at No. 2 doubles. No. 5 Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd. Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) completed the sweep with an 8-5 win over No. 47 Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wegner at No. 3.

Memphis took a 2-1 lead when Welcher beat Epstein 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 and Collins beat Elbaba 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1.

Nauta rallied for a three-set win over Liza Tymchenko at No. 2 to even the match at 2-2, but the Tigers regained the lead when Skylar Kuykendall defeated Xi 7-6, 7-5 at No. 3.

Hibberd clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) at No. 6 and Wegner beat Vierra 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5.

The Cavaliers (2-4) open ACC play at Maryland on Saturday, March 9.
