No. 6 Virginia Faces No. 1 Maryland in Home Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 6 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (2-1, 0-0 ACC) opens the 2013 ACC season hosting No. 1 Maryland (3-0, 1-0 ACC) on Friday, March 1 at 7 p.m. in its first home game of the year.
NOTE: There are multiple events happening on Friday night, including the Harlem Globetrotters at JPJ Arena. Parking will still be available at U-Hall and the Emmet/Ivy Garage, but all parking is on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking Map
This will be the 54th meeting all-time between the Cavaliers and the Terrapins, making Maryland the most-played opponent in Virginia women’s lacrosse history. The Cavaliers trail in the all time series, 36-17, and hold a 9-12 record at home. Virginia lost last year’s match-up in College Park, 12-9.
Maryland has won the last six games of the series. Virginia’s last win came in the 2008 ACC Championship game with a 10-9 overtime victory.
After coming up short at No. 2 Syracuse last week in New York, Virginia now has a chance to upset the No. 1 team in the country. Since 1988, the Cavaliers have faced the No. 1 team 23 times with Virginia knocking-off the top-ranked team in the nation three times. The last Virginia upset of the top-ranked team was the 2006 ACC Tournament when UVa upset No. 1 Duke, 13-8. Virginia defeated No. 1 Princeton, 10-4, to win the 2004 National Championship.
The last time that Virginia faced Maryland when it was ranked No. 1 was a 18-6 loss in Charlottesville in 2011, which was also a home-opener for the Cavaliers. Virginia also hosted Maryland in its home opener in 2005, earning a 15-8 victory. Overall, Virginia is 29-8 in its home openers and 1-1 when opening the home slate against the Terps.
At Syracuse last Sunday, the Cavaliers scored five goals in the first period by five different players. Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.), Caroline McTiernan (Sr., Garden City, N.Y.), Dana Boyle (R-So., Londonberry, N.H.), Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.), and Morgan Stephens (So., Olney, Md.) all scored before the break. In the first three games, eight Cavaliers have scored at least one goal.
Virginia is 2-0 in games in which they are trailing at halftime and 0-1 in games in which they have the lead at the break. At Loyola and Richmond, UVa trailed by a goal at halftime. At Syracuse, the Cavaliers twice trailed by a goal in the second period, only to come back and tie the game. They could not come back a third time after Syracuse took its third lead of the game with 4:56 remaining.
Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y.) leads the team with 11 points, with six goals and a team-best five assists. Bocklet has a team-high seven goals. Boyle has taken a team-high 15 shots. Swan leads the team in draw controls (9) and caused turnovers (5) and is tied with Megan Dunleavy (Sr., Fairfax, Va.) with six ground balls.
Goalkeeper Kim Kolarik (Sr., Riva, Md.) leads the ACC with 8.33 saves per game. She had 10 saves against Syracuse and shut out Richmond in the second half, coming up with six saves while not allowing a goal after the break.
Including the Maryland game, the Cavaliers play five preseason-top-10 ranked teams in their first six games. After Maryland, the UVa hosts No. 10 Penn State on Sunday, March 3 at 1 p.m. before traveling to No. 5 North Carolina for a game on Saturday, March 9 at 3:30 p.m. The Cavaliers began the season at No. 6 Loyola and then played at No. 2 Syracuse. In all, ten of this season’s Virginia opponents were ranked in the preseason top-20 polls.
