CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team had six players named to the 2012 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA National Academic Squad. The entire squad was also honored by the National Field Hockey Coaches’ Association with the 2012 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA National Academic Team Award.

The Cavaliers were one of 70 programs this year to have a team GPA of 3.0 or higher, earning them the Academic Team Award honor.

Six players who competed for Virginia during the 2012 season were named to the National Academic Squad. Hadley Bell (Jr., Shaker Heights, Ohio), Elizabeth Hanks (Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.), Jenny Johnstone (So., Paisley, Scotland), Lane Smith (Jr., Ottawa Hills, Ohio), Katie Robinson (Jr., Mount Joy, Pa.), and Phoebe Willis (Sr., Fredericksburg, Va.) achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2012-13 academic year. Additionally, Sallie Seiy (Jr., Martinsville, Va.), who missed the season due to injury, and Tollie Bell (R-Fr., Norfolk, Va.), who sat out the year after transferring in from North Carolina, also earned the academic accolade.
