CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 8 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (2-3) takes on its fifth top-10-ranked opponent of the season, facing No. 3 North Carolina (4-1) on Saturday, March 9 at 3:30 p.m. in Chapel Hill. The game is part of a double header with the Tar Heel men’s team. The UNC men host Princeton at 12 p.m.
The game against Carolina wraps up an opening stretch for the Cavaliers in which they have faced five top-10-ranked teams in the first six games. The Cavaliers have also played a team ranked No. 1 (Maryland) and No. 2 (Syracuse) and will now be facing the No. 3 Tar Heels.
After losses to Maryland and No. 10 Penn State, Virginia fell from No. 6 in the IWLCA poll to its current ranking of No. 8. UVa is No. 10 in this week’s deBeer/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll.
The Cavaliers hold a 15-14 advantage in the all-time series against the Tar Heels, but have lost the last six meetings including two losses in NCAA Tournament games and a pair of losses in ACC Tournament play. Virginia’s last victory over North Carolina was a 2010 regular-season 13-12 overtime game in Charlottesville when UNC was ranked No. 3 and UVa was ranked No. 8.
Virginia is averaging 11.20 goals per game to North Carolina’s 9.60 but the Tar Heels lead the ACC with 17.0 ground balls per game. The Cavaliers average 14.6 ground balls per game. Virginia has the edge in draw controls, winning 13.0 per game to UNC’s 9.2.
Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.) and Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y.) are both ranked in the top-10 in the conference in scoring. Bocklet is seventh with a 2.6 goals-per-game average. Warner is tenth, scoring 2.4 per contest. Bocklet is tied for fourth in the conference in points (3.8 per game) while Warner is right behind her, ranking sixth (3.6 per game).
Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) is fifth in the ACC in draw controls, winning 3.2 per game.
Dana Boyle (R-So., Londonderry, N.H.) had her second career hat trick in the loss to Penn State. Boyle, who sat out 2012 recovering from an injury, scored three goals with an assist. Warner, who has a team-high three games with three-or-more goals in a game, also had a hat trick against the Nittany Lions.
The Cavaliers have a pair of upcoming home games, hosting William & Mary on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. and Princeton on Saturday, March 16 at 12 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. The Princeton game is part of a doubleheader with the UVa men’s lacrosse team. The Cavalier men will be taking on Ohio State at 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the women’s game.
Single-game tickets to Virginia lacrosse games are $10 (reserved seating), $8 (adult general admission) and $6 (youth, senior, faculty/staff general admission). Tickets are available in advance of the game through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office beginning February 8. Tickets may be ordered in person at Bryant Hall with a major credit card, by phone at (800) 542-8821 or online. Advance ticket sales end three hours prior to the game. Tickets are also available on game day at the Klöckner Stadium ticket windows, subject to availability, beginning one hour prior to the game.
