FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in two events on the first day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday at the Randal Tyson Track on the campus of the University of Arkansas. The men’s distance medley relay team posted a 10th place finish, while senior Vicky Fouhy finished 12th in the preliminaries of the women’s mile.

“All five athletes competing today were making their first trip to the NCAAs,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “As with every opportunity, we hope it can be a learning experience to improve on for the next time. The NCAA Indoor Championships is the hardest meet in the world to make, so this experience should be something to cherish.”

Fouhy ran 4:41.29 during the second heat of preliminaries of the women’s mile. She had the 12th overall time, but was not one of the 10 runners to advance to Saturday’s final.

The DMR squad of Anthony Kostelac, Payton Hazzard, Brandon Burton and Taylor Gilland finished in a time of 9:43.70. The Cavaliers’ 10th-place finish was two spots higher than their No. 12 seed coming into the race.

Virginia will have one competitor on the final day of the meet on Saturday. Dallas Rose will be in action in the women’s triple jump. It is her second consecutive NCAA Indoor Championship appearance as she finished 12th in the event last year.
