CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (2-4, 0-0 ACC) hosts William & Mary (2-4, 0-1 CAA) in a midweek game on Wednesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
The Cavaliers hold a 29-17-1 all-time record against the Tribe and are 15-7 in Charlottesville. Virginia has won the last 11 meetings between the two teams. William & Mary’s last victory over UVa was a 13-10 victory in 2001. The last time William & Mary won in Charlottesville was a 6-5 game in 1990 when the Tribe were ranked No.6 and UVa ranked No. 7. The two teams have played one another at least once a year every year since 1976.
Virginia is averaging 10.5 goals per game to William & Mary’s 12.8. The Tribe have 114 ground balls to the Cavaliers’ 86. The Tribe also have the edge in draw controls with 87 to UVa’s 77.
The game against William & Mary is just the second time this season that Virginia will take on an unranked team. UVa is 1-0 against unranked teams and 1-4 against ranked opponents.
Sunday’s 8-7 loss at North Carolina wrapped up an opening stretch for the Cavaliers in which they faced five top-10-ranked teams in the first six games. Virginia has played a team ranked No. 1 (Maryland) and No. 2 (Syracuse) and No. 3 (North Carolina).
Virginia’s current four-game slide matches the most losses in a row in program history. Virginia lost four games to close out the 2011 season. The only other time UVa has lost four games in a row during the regular season was 1995 when the team won its opener and then dropped four straight to start the season 1-4.
Three of Virginia’s losses this season have been by one goal. This is only the fifth time in program history that a team has lost in regulation three times in during a season by one goal. Last season, UVa lost one game by a one-goal margin, falling 10-9 at Virginia Tech. In 2006, the last time that the Cavaliers lost three one-goal games, three of the four total losses that season were by that margin.
Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.), Morgan Stephens (So., Olney, Md.), and Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) have scored at least one goal in every game this season. Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y.) has scored a goal or had an assist in every game this season. Warner and Bocklet each have three hat tricks this season.
Bocklet is tied for fourth in the ACC in goals per game (2.67) and tied for sixth in assists per game (1.17). She ranks fifth in points per game (3.83). Warner is tied with Bocklet for sixth with 1.17 assists per game.
Swan ranks fourth in the ACC in draw controls, averaging 3.33 per game.
Dana Boyle (R-So., Londonderry, N.H.), who has appeared in all six games but has only one start, is making the most of her time off the bench, averaging 5.33 shots per game, which ranks sixth among ACC players.
The Cavaliers host Princeton on Saturday, March 16 at 12 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium. The game is part of a doubleheader with the UVa men’s lacrosse team. The Cavalier men will be taking on Ohio State at 3 p.m. following the conclusion of the women’s game.
