COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 3 Texas A&M defeated Virginia, 5-2, in women’s tennis action Wednesday night at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station. Texas A&M improves to 11-1, while the Cavaliers fall to 3-6.

The Cavaliers got off to a good start, claiming the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. Senior Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and freshman Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) beat Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Nazari Urbina, 8-2, at No. 2. Freshman Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and junior Li Xi (Kunming, China) clinched the doubles point with an 8-3 win over Ines and Paula Deheza at No. 3.

The Aggies then clinched the match by winning four straight singles matches. Stefania Hristov beat Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Wen Sun defeated Vierra 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 and Ines Deheza beat Xi 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4. No. 83 Cristina Stancu beat No. 71 Nauta 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2.

Tomljanovic continued her strong play by defeating No. 43 Urbina 6-3, 7-6 at No. 3. No. 6 Sanchez-Quintanar closed the scoring with a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 win over No. 13 Elbaba at No. 1.

Virginia returns to action at the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic on March 15-17 in Montgomery, Ala. The Cavaliers play Michigan State on Friday at 5 p.m.
