CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The defending national champion Virginia rowing team opens its 2013 slate with the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational in Oak Ridge, Tenn., Saturday and Sunday (March 16-17). The Cavaliers will compete in two sessions on Saturday and one on Sunday morning.

UVa will face off against boats from host Louisville and West Virginia in the morning on Saturday and future ACC foe Notre Dame and Georgetown in the afternoon. On Sunday, the Cavaliers will race Alabama and conference-rival Duke. Virginia will have seven boats competing (three varsity eights, three varsity fours and one novice eight) in six races each session.

Other schools competing at the regatta include Buffalo, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Kansas and Miami.

The Cavaliers had a successful scrimmage against Michigan State on March 9 at Claytor Lake State Park and will look to continue their momentum after a strong fall campaign. Virginia’s varsity eight had the top collegiate boat in the Championship Eights at the Head of the Charles in Boston and the fastest boat at the Princeton Chase and Rivanna Romp.

After this weekend, Virginia will prepare for the San Diego Crew Classic in San Diego, Calif., April 6-7.
