No. 9 Virginia Falls to No. 6 Duke, 13-7

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s lacrosse team fell 13-7 to No. 6 Duke, snapping a Cavalier three-game win streak.
Virginia trailed by a goal, 6-5, at halftime, but was outscored 7-2 in the final 30 minutes. Duke took 18 shots to Virginia’s nine in the second half.
“I don’t think we shot particularly well in either half, but we needed to do a better job in the second half” said head coach Julie Myers. “I thought we were competitive in the first, and then we had a couple of breakdowns on defense and gave them some really easy looks at the goal.”
Virginia got off to a quick start with Christie Donovan subbing in right after the opening draw and scoring a goal with 29:19 remaining in the half. It was her only appearance in the contest.
After Duke tied the game, 1-1, Casey Bocklet scored the first of her two goals by using footwork to create open space in front of the net and zinging in a shot with 20:08 remaining.
After Duke tied the game back up, 2-2, Dana Boyle took a pass from Morgan Stephens to put UVa up, 3-2, with 17:44 remaining.
Courtney Swan knotted the game for the third time, 4-4, with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. After a pair of Duke goals, Bocklet again danced in front of the net, creating an open look and pulling the Cavaliers within one, 6-5, with 1:52 left in the first half.
After eight-and-a-half scoreless minutes to start the second period, Duke’s Taylor Trimble extended the Blue Devils’ lead, 7-5. Duke added two more goals before a free position goal from Caroline McTiernan followed by an Ashlee Warner goal 24 seconds later returned the Cavaliers’ deficit to two, 9-7, with 11:17 remaining.
Trailing 11-7, Virginia took three shots on goal, but couldn’t get the ball into the net. After Virginia turned the ball over with 1:44 remaining, Duke raced down the field scoring 25 seconds later.
The Blue Devils (9-1, 2-1 ACC) added a final goal with 22 seconds remaining to win its second ACC game of the season while Virginia fell to 0-3 in ACC contests and 5-5 overall. All five of Virginia’s losses have come in games against top-10-ranked opponents.
“I think there were a couple of times we made some mistakes and came up empty,” Myers said. “We gave Duke, who is a really disciplined team, too many opportunities. What we take away from this game is we can’t play flat.”
Bocklet scored two goals with an assist. Warner had a goal and an assist. Liz Colgan, making her second-straight start in goal, logged six saves.
Virginia won 13 draw controls, including eight in the first half, with Stephens and Swan winning four apiece.
After Duke, Virginia will embark on a three-game road trip. The Cavaliers will play a midweek game on Wednesday, March 27 at Old Dominion before traveling to Boston College for a game on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m. They close out the trip on Tuesday, April 2 at American at 4 p.m. in Washington, D.C.
The Cavaliers close out the regular-season with three home games against Northwestern (April 7), Johns Hopkins (April 11) and Virginia Tech (April 17).
