Virginia Drops Doubleheader at Maryland, 6-5 and 9-6

COLLEGE PARK, Md.—The Virginia softball team dropped a doubleheader at Maryland, 6-5 and 9-6, Saturday afternoon (March 23) at Robert E. Taylor Stadium in College Park, Md. With the losses, the Cavaliers fell to 12-14 (1-4 ACC), while the Terps improved to 13-16 (2-0 ACC).
In the first game, UVa scored three unearned runs in the first inning, including sacrifice flies by junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) and sophomore Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.).
Maryland answered with two runs in the bottom of the first and struck for four in the third frame, including a three-run home run by Shannon Bustillos.
In the sixth inning, junior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) scored on a Johnson single, while Harris also came home on the play to cut the lead to 6-5.
Terrapin pitcher Maddie Martin (5-7) earned the win, allowing five runs (two earned) with five strikeouts in seven innings.
UVa senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) tossed her 103rd complete game of her career, setting a new program record. She broke the tie with Lisa Palmer (102). Mitchell (9-8) allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.
In the second game, Maryland’s Lindsey Schmeiser hit a three-run home run of the day in the bottom of the first, as the Terps went on to win, 9-6.
Virginia scored two in the top of the first as senior Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.) tripled to score Johnson and senior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.). Hawkins doubled home Skinkis in the fourth to bring UVa’s tally to three.
UVa scored a fourth run in the fifth inning when Johnson singled home Velk for an unearned run and Skinkis hit a two-run double in the seventh to score Johnson and Harris.
Freshman pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed eight runs (four earned) in three innings in the loss to fall to 3-5 on the season. Classmate Emma Mitchell (Doswell, Va.) allowed just one unearned run in three innings of relief.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched the second game for Maryland and improved to 6-7 on the year after allowing six runs (five earned) in 6.2 innings.
Bowdren’s hitting streak of 12 games ended in the second game.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday (March 23) at 1 p.m.
