Virginia Men Start NCAA Championships Thursday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The ACC champion Virginia men’s swimming and diving team will send 13 student-athletes to the NCAA Championships, set for March 28-30 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Preliminaries begin each day at 11 a.m. and finals will start each evening at 7 p.m. ESPN3 will carry a live broadcast of the finals sessions on Friday and Saturday. Live results for the meet as well as a blog covering the action at all six sessions will be linked on VirginiaSports.com.
“This has been a good year for our men,” UVa head coach Mark Bernardino said. “We surprised some people this year and I think that is because of the team chemistry we’ve had. One of our goals is to always be in the top 15 and it’s going to a battle to achieve that, but I wouldn’t put anything past this team.”
Seniors Tom Barrett and Matt Murray, juniors Jan Daniec, Taylor Grey, Jack Murfee and Brad Phillips, sophomore David Ingraham and freshmen Nick Alexiou and Luke Papendick will all participate in individual swimming events at the NCAA Championships.
Juniors Jonathan Buerger and Parker Camp and sophomore Charlie Rommel will compete in the Cavalier relays.
Virginia will compete in five relays at the national meet, including the 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relays and the 200 and 400 medley relay.
In addition to the swimmers, Virginia is sending a diver for the second consecutive season. Sophomore JB Kolod will compete in all three diving events. Kolod has broken the 1- and 3-meter school records this season.
The highest finish in school history for UVa was an eighth-place showing in 2011.
UVa captured its 16th Atlantic Coast Conference crown March 2, at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers finished with 759.5 points for their sixth consecutive ACC title. Virginia Tech was second (597), while North Carolina (549) was third.
Barrett (200 free), Daniec (1,650 free), Grey (200 breaststroke) and Phillips (500 free) all won individual conference titles, while the 800 free relay of Alexiou, Barrett, Ingraham and Camp also captured the ACC title.
Barrett returns to the NCAA Championships for the third consecutive year, while Camp, Daniec, Grey and Murray will make their second appearance.
Eight Cavaliers will compete for the first time at the national championships, including Alexiou, Buerger, Ingraham, Kolod, Murfee, Papendick, Phillips and Rommel.
The action begins Thursday with the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, 1-meter diving and 400 medley relay events.
