SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA—Two former Virginia rowers, Christine Roper and Kerry (Maher) Shaffer, medaled with Canada’s women’s eight at the Samsung World Rowing Cup I event held in Sydney, Australia, March 22-24.

Shaffer and Roper, sitting in seats two and five, respectively, helped the Canadians to a bronze medal in the women’s eight in a time of 6:10.47, behind Australia (6:06.98) and the United States (6:07.83).

Shaffer was also in the bow seat of the women’s quadruple sculls boat that placed fifth in 6:31.62, while Roper competed in the women’s pair that finished sixth in 7:24.30.

Roper, a 2011 graduate, competed for Canada at the past three World Under-23 Rowing Championships (2010-12), earning three medals, including gold in the women’s four in 2012 in Trakai, Lithuania. She was a second-team All-American in 2011 for Virginia.

Shaffer, a 2007 graduate, competed for the Canadian national team in the women’s double at the 2011 World Rowing Championships, placing 13th. She was a first-team All-American in 2007 for UVa.

The Samsung World Rowing Cup series continues June 21-23 in Eton Dorney, England, and July 12-14 in Lucerne, Switzerland.
