Cavaliers Win 12 Events at Virginia Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams won 12 individual events on Saturday during competition at the Virginia Invitational at Lannigan Field. Both the Cavalier men and women finished second at the meet as the Charlotte men and Kent State women took top honors.
“Each week of the season we want to build from where we were the previous week,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “The team did a very good job of stepping things up today. We had some folks have some monster PRs today, which is great, especially to do it on your home track. We now need to continue this and raise our level again next week as we take on two very good programs.”
The Virginia women won six events. In the 800 meters, Vanessa Fabrizio (2:06.45) edged Vicky Fouhy (2:06.89) for first place as they posted the fifth and sixth fastest times in school history. Moira Cronin and Pearl Bickersteth had the top two marks in the high jump, with Cronin winning in a PR of 1.80m, a jump tied for fifth best in school history. Abbey Karin had the top throw in the javelin at 47.32m, the fourth-best mark in school history. For the second straight week, Barbara Strehler ran a PR to win the 1500 meters. The 4×400 meter relay squad of Jordan Lavender, Fabrizio, Colette Gnade and Payton Chaney was victorious, as was Katherine Walkerin the 5,000 meters.
The Cavalier men claimed the top place in six events as well. Virginia won the four longest races of the day with Anthony Kostelac winning the 800 meters, Kyle King taking the 1500 meter title, Christopher Foley finishing first in the 5000 meters and Bryan Lewis victorious in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Tommy DeVita won the high jump title with a PR of 2.07m and Brandon Burtonadded a victory in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Cavaliers will return to action next Saturday as they travel west to Berkeley, Calif., for a tri-meet with Cal and Michigan.
