CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers (5-5, 0-1 ACC), ranked No. 18 in this week’s USILA coaches and No. 19 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media polls, host the North Carolina Tar Heels (7-3, 1-1 ACC) on Saturday at Klöckner Stadium. The Tar Heels are ranked No. 4 in the USILA coaches poll and No. 6 in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll. Faceoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
There will be a live radio broadcast in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM, which will be simulcast as an audio webcast for a subscription cost on VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live. John Freeman will bring the play-by-play, Doug Tarring will provide the game analysis and Jack Bird will roam the sidelines. ESPN3 will have a webcast of the game live in HD with Booker Corrigan bringing the play-by-play and Ryan Flanagan providing color analysis.
The 2003 Virginia NCAA title team will be recognized at halftime in a 10-year anniversary celebration of the program’s third of five NCAA titles. The 2003 team went 15-2 and defeated Johns Hopkins 9-7 in the title game at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. Members of the 2003 team that will be on hand to be honored Saturday include: Jimmy Barter, Ryan Binder, Ned Bowen, Doug Brody, David Burman, Jack deVilliers, Brendan Gill, Billy Glading, Charlie Glazer, Hunter Kass, Ted Lamade, Justin Mullen, Derrick Preuss, Chris Rotelli, A.J. Shannon, Hatcher Snead, Calvin Sullivan, Trey Whitty.
Saturday marks the 75th all-time meeting between the Cavaliers and the Tar Heels, a series the Cavaliers own a 49-25 advantage in since 1938. Facing the Tar Heels every year since 1964, UVa earned a 15-10 win during the regular season meeting in 2012, the Cavaliers’ first game at UNC’s Fetzer Field since 2008. UNC ended up snapping a nine-game losing streak to UVa with a 9-7 triumph in the ACC Tournament’s semifinal round last season in Charlottesville.
The Cavaliers have lost four games in a row. It is only the fourth time since 1967 a UVa squad has lost four games in a row. Since the NCAA Championship era began in 1971, no Virginia squad has ever lost five games in a row. UVa last lost five games in a row when the Cavaliers opened the 1966 season with five-straight losses, a streak that was part of a six-game losing streak dating back to the 1965 season.
Nick O’Reilly leads UVa with 20 assists and 36 points, while Mark Cockerton is No. 3 in the nation with 29 goals. Matt White and Rob Emery round out UVa’s top goal scorers with 15 and 14, respectively. Scott McWilliams is No. 2 in the nation with 27 caused turnovers and has 36 ground balls. UVa has two options in goal with Rhody Heller and Dan Marino. Heller, who started the last three games, is saving 47.6 percent of shots against him and has a 11.49 goals against average. Marino has posted a 9.12 goals-against average and has saved 45.0 percent of shots in between the pipes.
North Carolina head coach Joe Breschi is in his fifth season at North Carolina and returns 30 letterwinners from last year’s 11-6 squad. Marcus Holman, who owns the nation’s fourth-longest active consecutive goal streak at 25, leads the Tar Heels with 24 goals and 23 assists for 47 points. Joey Sankey has a team-high 26 goals and Jimmy Bitter rounds out the top performers with 19 goals. R.G. Keenan leads UNC at the faceoff X with a 54.4 percent (123-of-226) success rate. Kieran Burke is saving 53.8 percent of shots inside the pipes and posting a 10.13 goals-against average.
Virginia concludes its ACC schedule on April 12 when they travel down to Durham to face the Duke Blue Devils. The contest will be televised live on ESPNU in HD. Faceoff for the Friday tilt is set for 6 p.m.
