CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 11 Virginia women’s lacrosse team (7-7, 0-4 ACC) hosts its second ranked opponent of the homestand, taking on No. 20 Johns Hopkins on Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.
The two teams have only faced one another four times since their first meeting in 2005. UVa holds a 3-1 advantage in the series, including a 2-0 record in Charlottesville. Last year, the No. 12 Cavaliers won 11-7 at No. 19 Johns Hopkins.
Virginia remained at No. 11 in this week’s IWLCA Coaches Poll after logging a dominant victory at American, 16-4, before falling to No. 6 Duke, 13-7. The Cavaliers dropped to No. 15 in the deBeer/ Inside Lacrosse media poll.
Johns Hopkins fell out of this week’s deBeer/ Inside Lacrosse media poll but held on at No. 20 in the IWLCA poll after losing 19-9 on Saturday at No. 3 Florida. Prior to the game against the Gators, the Blue Jays played several tight games, including a one-goal victory at Towson and a pair of overtime games. Against Vanderbilt, the Blue Jays scored a pair of overtime goals to earn a 12-11 victory. At American, the Eagles scored with less than a minute remaining in the game to force overtime and scored the game-winner with 8.6 seconds left in OT to upset Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays also held a second-half lead at Princeton before the Tigers scored six straight goals to close out the game and come away with a 10-7 victory.
Virginia comes into the game with a 7-7 record, going 3-3 in its last six contests. Johns Hopkins is the ninth ranked team the Cavaliers have faced this season. Virginia is 2-6 against teams in the top-20, with victories over then-ranked No. 6 Loyola and then-ranked No. 19 James Madison.
Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) had strong efforts last week, scoring four goals with two assists while winning 10 draw controls, coming up with five ground balls, and causing three turnovers. Swan is ranked third in the ACC and 32nd in the NCAA in draws per game, winning 3.64 per game.
Ashlee Warner (Jr., Corning, N.Y) also had a six-point week, scoring four goals with two assists. Warner is second on the team with 43 points, also ranking second in goals (28) and assists (15). Warner has scored a goal in each of the last eight games. She and Morgan Stephens (So., Olney, Md.) have logged at least one point in all 14 games this season.
Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.), who had an assist but did not score a goal against her former Wildcat teammates, continues to lead the Cavaliers in goals (31), assists (16) and points (47). Bocklet ranks sixth in the ACC in points-per-game (3.36) and ninth in goals per game (2.21) as well as being tied for sixth in assists per game (1.14).
After the Johns Hopkins game, the Cavaliers will have one regular-season contest remaining, as they host Virginia Tech on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
