CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers (6-7), seeded No. 4 in the 2013 ACC Championship, will face the top-seeded Maryland Terrapins (9-2) on Friday at 5 p.m. in the first semifinal game of the tournament at North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. Live stats will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
There will be a live radio broadcast in the Charlottesville area on WINA 1070 AM, which will be simulcast as an audio webcast for a subscription cost on VirginiaSports.com through Cavaliers Live. John Freeman will bring the play-by-play and Jack Bird will provide the game analysis. ESPNU will televise the game live in HD with Mike Corey bringing the play-by-play and Matt Ward adding color commentary. There will be a web simulcast on ESPN3.
Virginia is receiving votes this week in the USILA coaches poll, while Maryland is ranked No. 2 in this week’s Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll and No. 3 in the USILA coaches poll. Faceoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Virginia is 19-18 all-time in the ACC Tournament since the inception of the event in 1989. The Cavaliers are 7-6 against Maryland all-time in the ACC Tournament and are facing the Terrapins for the first time in the championship for the first time since the 2010 final, a 10-6 UVa win. The Cavaliers are 4-4 all-time against the Terrapins in the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament, with the last win coming in 2008 when UVa topped Maryland 11-8 at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia is 0-2 all-time inside North Carolina’s Kenan Stadium in ACC Championship play. Friday marks the 14th time UVa and Maryland have met in the ACC Tournament and 10th time in the semifinal round.
2013 marked the 65th-straight season the Cavaliers and the Terrapins have clashed in a series that began in 1926. Maryland holds the all-time series advantage with a 46-43 mark, however Virginia has won 11 of the last 14 meetings, including the 2011 NCAA title game, 9-7, at M&T Bank Stadium.
Nick O’Reilly’s 29 assists and 49 points (20 goals) lead Virginia, while Mark Cockerton leads the nation with 42 goals. Rob Emery and Matt White round out UVa’s top scorers with 20 and 19 goals, respectively. Scott McWilliams is No. 2 in the nation with 35 caused turnovers, while Tanner Scales leads the nation’s freshmen with 22 caused turnovers. Rhody Heller has started the last six games in the cage and is posting a 11.67 goals against average and saving 49.4 percent of shots against him.
Maryland head coach John Tillman is in his third season after a successful three-year run at Harvard and returns 38 letterwinners and five starters off last season’s national runner-up squad. Mike Chanenchuk leads Maryland with 18 goals, while Owen Blye, Jay Carlson and Kevin Cooper all have 17 goals. Jake Bernhardt and John Haus round out the top Terrapin goal-scorers with 14 nylon rips. In all, 22 players have recorded at least one point for Maryland. Niko Amato is saving 61.9 percent of shots against him in between the pipes and owns a 7.16 goals against average.
The victor of Friday’s contest will return to Kenan Stadium on Sunday to face the winner of No. 2 seed North Carolina versus No. 3 seed Duke. The ACC Championship final will faceoff at 1 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU in HD.
