UVa Men's Golfers Finish Sixth at ACC Championships

New London, N.C. – The Virginia men’s golf team finished sixth at the 60th annual ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. Despite placing in the middle of the 11-team tournament, the Cavaliers improved their standing for an NCAA Regional bid by finishing ahead of three ACC foes that are currently ranked in the top-50 of the latest Golfstat rankings.

No. 9 Duke used a final round of 4-under 284 to overtake No. 14 Florida State for the team title. The Seminoles lead after the opening two rounds and carried a four-stroke advantage into Sunday’s final 18 holes. Duke’s winning score was 25-under 839. FSU tied Virginia Tech for second at 842. No. 7 Georgia Tech was fourth at 851 and No. 27 Clemson was fifth at 859.

Virginia shot 8-over 296 on Sunday and finished at 2-under 862. No. 46 North Carolina was seventh at 869, No. 32 Wake Forest was eighth at 872 and No. 36 NC State was ninth at 881. The final round was contested in steady rains that were heavy at times.

Virginia was led by sophomore Ji Soo Park who shot 2-under 70 for the second consecutive day. He finished 15th overall at 2-under 214. It was the lowest tournament score in his career, topping the 217 he shot at the USF Invitational in March.

“We did what we needed to do this weekend to put us in a better position for the NCAAs,” said head coach Bowen Sargent. “It was great to see Ji play so well over the last two days. This was a solid performance for us.”

UVa’s Mac McLaughlin and Nick Tremps both shot 4-over 76 during the final day to tie for 26th at 2-over 218. Denny McCarthy shot 78 during the final round and David Pastore carded a score of 76. They tied for 29th place at 3-over 219.

Georgia Tech’s Anders Albertson won the individual title by five shots, taking medalist honors at 15-under 201.

The Cavaliers played the tournament without 2012 ACC individual champion Ben Rusch, who is redshirting the season and will use his final year of eligibility next year.

The NCAA regionals will take place May 16-18 at six pre-determined sites. The NCAA will announce the regional field on Monday, May 6.
