CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Virginia Tech, 6-0 and 5-1, in front of a capacity crowd of 475 on Sunday afternoon (April 28) at The Park in Charlottesville.

The Cavaliers fell to 20-27 on the season (3-17 ACC), while the Hokies improved to 31-15 (8-8 ACC).

In the top of the third, Virginia Tech’s Lauren Gaskill hit a 2-run home run to left center to open the scoring. The Hokies added a run in the fifth on a Bkaye Smith RBI single and added three more runs in the sixth.

Senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) allowed six runs on eight hits with five strikeouts in the loss (15-16).

Kelly Heinz (14-5) gave up five hits in six innings to earn the win.

In the second game, Virginia Tech out hit the Cavaliers, 9-4, on the way to a 5-1 win.

With VT leading 2-0 in the fourth, the Cavaliers cut the lead to one on a RBI single by junior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) that scored sophomore Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.).

The Hokies extended the lead to 4-1 in the fifth on a home run by Kat Banks and a RBI double by Bailey Liddle. Gaskill hit her second home run of the day in the sixth to push the lead to 5-1.

Freshman pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched a complete game, allowing five runs in seven innings, but took the loss (5-10).

VT’s Jasmin Harrell (14-7) gave up four hits and one run in the complete game win.

The two teams conclude the series with a single game Monday (April 29). First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on ESPNU. It will be the Cavaliers’ regular season finale.
