Virginia's Varsity Eight Named ACC Crew of the Week

GREENSBORO, N.C.—The Virginia rowing Varsity Eight has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Crew of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Tuesday (May 7).
The No. 5 Cavaliers’ top boat, which won five races over the past three weeks, consisted of junior coxswain Sarah Jordan (Flourtown, Pa.), junior Constanze Duell (Oberschleissheim, Germany), sophomore Chandler Lally (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), senior Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), graduate student Sarah Cowburn (Worcestershire, England), junior Fiona Schlesinger (New Maiden, Surrey, United Kingdom), senior Susanne Grainger (London, Ontario), sophomore Hemingway Benton (Glencoe, Ill.) and sophomore Lizzy Youngling (Westport, Conn.).
On April 20 at the Clemson Invitational, Virginia posted a time of 6:24.1 in defeating No. 3 Ohio State, No. 19 Louisville, No. 20 Oklahoma, Minnesota and Central Florida in the morning, then recorded a season-best time of 6:12.8 in downing No. 6 UCLA, No. 13 ranked Michigan, No. 17 Cornell, Duke, Oregon State and Oklahoma in the afternoon. On April 21, UVa defeated Miami, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Rhode Island in a time of 6:38.2 in extremely windy conditions.
At the UVa Invitational on April 27 on Lake Monticello, the Cavaliers took down Michigan in the morning in 6:23.8 and No. 14 Wisconsin in 6:41.0 in the afternoon.
Next up, the Cavaliers look to defend their ACC Championship on Sunday (May 12) on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. UVa is looking for its fourth consecutive conference crown and 13th title in 14 years.
