CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia women’s lacrosse team heads to Chapel Hill, N.C., to take on third-seeded North Carolina in the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championships on Saturday, May 18 at 1 p.m. Free live streaming video of the game will be available on GoHeels.com.
The Cavaliers are making their 18th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 26th overall trip to the postseason. Virginia has won the National Championship three times, including a 2004 title under head coach Julie Myers. Virginia has made 13 trips to the national semifinals, topped only by Maryland’s 19 appearances.
The Cavaliers have a 31-22 overall record in NCAA Tournament games.
Virginia advanced to the quarterfinals with a 12-6 first-round victory over Penn and a 10-8 second-round upset of sixth-seeded Georgetown.
North Carolina received a first-round bye as one of the top-six national seeds. The Tar Heels advanced to the quarterfinals with a 19-9 victory over Loyola in Chapel Hill last Sunday.
Virginia is currently ranked No. 12 in the IWLCA poll. North Carolina is ranked No. 3, a position they have held most of the season.
Virginia is 5-8 this season against teams ranked in the top-20, 3-7 against top-10 teams, but 0-5 against top-five squads.
In each of the previous five years, Virginia has been eliminated from the NCAA Tournament by an ACC team. North Carolina holds a 5-1 advantage over Virginia in NCAA Tournament games with the Cavaliers’ lone victory coming in 2007, a 14-8 quarterfinal win.
Overall, the series between UNC and UVa is knotted 15-15, but the Tar Heels have won the last seven meetings, including a pair of NCAA Tournament games and two ACC Tournament contests. Most recently, UNC held on for an 8-7 victory on March 9 in Chapel Hill.
The Cavaliers’ last trip to the NCAA Quarterfinals was in 2010, when they fell 17-7 at North Carolina.
North Carolina is second in the ACC, averaging 13.33 goals per game. Virginia is last at 10.55 goals per game. UNC leads the ACC with 16.72 ground balls per game and is second with 7.94 caused turnovers. Virginia averages 13.35 ground balls and 6.10 caused turnovers. UNC averages 12.61 draw controls to Virginia’s 12.50.
The Tar Heel attack is led by Kara Cannizzaro, ranked third in the ACC with 2.78 goals per game and fourth in points at 3.78. She also leads the conference with 1.50 caused turnovers per game. Margaret Corzel is second in the ACC with 1.83 ground balls per game.
Casey Bocklet (So., South Salem, N.Y.), who earned 2013 IWLCA third-team All-America honors, continues to lead the team in goals (39), assists (19) and points (58). Bocklet has seven points in the NCAA Tournament with six goals and an assist, logging her team-leading seventh hat trick of the season against Penn, scoring four goals. Bocklet is ninth in the ACC, averaging 2.15 goals per game.
Caroline McTiernan (Sr., Garden City, N.Y.) scored her team-best fifth game-winning goal of the year against Georgetown. McTiernan has five goals in the NCAA Tournament, including a hat trick against Georgetown, her second hat trick of the season.
Liza Blue (So., Butler, Md.) scored a career-best four goals against Duke, putting up a hat trick in the first half. She also had a hat trick against Penn. Blue has scored 10 goals since the end of the regular season, after scoring four goals during an injury-shortened regular season. Blue missed the first eight games of the season, making her season debut at James Madison on March 20.
Courtney Swan (So., Vero Beach, Fla.) is ranked 3rd in the ACC and 21st in the NCAA in draw controls, averaging 4.05 per game. Swan has had seven draw controls in two of the last three games. In the last eight contests, she is averaging 5.0 draw controls per games.
Morgan Stephens (So., Olney, Md.) has had at least one ground ball in each of the last ten games. Against Georgetown, Stephens had four caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draw controls.
Kelly Boyd (Fr., Baltimore, Md.) has had a goal in four of the last five games. Boyd leads all Cavalier first-years with nine goals and two assists. Her fellow rookie attacker Taylor Ranftle (Fr., Hauppauge, N.Y.) has five goals this season, including a score against Penn, on six shots.
