Cavaliers Continue Competition at NCAA East Preliminaries

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia men’s and women’s track and field teams continued to compete for places at the NCAA Championships in Oregon during day two of the NCAA East Preliminary rounds at Aggie Stadium on the campus of North Carolina A&T. The Cavaliers had six athletes in action on Friday but none were able to advance to the next round of the meet.

Jordan Lavender was the only Cavalier to compete in two events on Friday. After advancing from the first round in the 400m on Thursday, she finished 16th in the quarterfinals with a time of 53.31, just shy of the top 12 that advance to Oregon. Later in the evening she finished 38th in the first round of the 200m in a time of 24.33.

Anthony Kostelac just missed qualifying for Oregon in the men’s 800m. His time of 1:50.45 was the 14th best time of the quarterfinal round.

In the men’s 400m quarterfinals, Payton Hazzard did not advance as he ran 47.46, which was good for 20th place.

Colin Mearns finished 15th in his heat of the men’s steeplechase in a time of 9:27.22.

Moira Cronin and Pearl Bickersteth both cleared 1.72m in the women’s high jump, but couldn’t clear 1.77m and did not advance.

The meet concludes Saturday with eight Virginia athletes in action. During the afternoon field events, Abbey Karin will compete in the women’s javelin and Ryan Satchell will compete in the men’s triple jump. In the evening track events, Vicky Fouhy and Taylor Gilland have quarterfinal races in the women’s and men’s 1500m respectively. In the 5000m, Barbara Strehler and Kathleen Stevens are in the women’s race and Mark Amirault and Thomas Porter are in the men’s race. Porter is the only Cavalier to qualify thus far for the NCAA Championships, having finished seventh in the men’s 10000m on Thursday night.
