CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –

Carissa Vittese, Rachel Sumfest, Michelle Vittese and Paige Selenski are among the 108 athletes selected to compete for a spot on the U.S. Women’s National Team roster at the 2013 Women’s National Championship at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. The Vittese sisters and Selenski are playing for the Mid-Atlantic/South team, while Sumfest is competing on the Pennsylvania squad.

U.S. National Team head coach Craig Parnham will be evaluating matches and selecting outstanding players from the pool of participants to represent Team USA on the international stage.

“The Women’s National Championship is the first opportunity for me to see all of the players in one place and that is really quite exciting,” said Parnham. “It is very important for me to have a good look at every player at the tournament.”

Parnham is looking to select a team of 24 players from the pool. Players will receive emails from Parnham roughly 48-72 hours following the conclusion of the tournament. In addition to the 24 senior athletes selected, Parnham will also announce a development squad.

Both Selenski and Michelle Vittese have been members of the U.S. National Team since 2010, winning a gold medal at the 2011 Pan American Games in Argentina and playing at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Virginia teammates will play against one another in the championship game after Pennsylvania went 5-1 in the tournament and Mid-Atlantic/South went 4-1-1. Sumfest scored the first goal of the tournament for the Pennsylvania squad. Carissa and Michelle Vittese both scored in Tuesday’s victory over Midwest/California.

Complete stats and recaps are available on the USA Field Hockey website.

Admission is free and open to the public. All matches will be played at Powhatan Sports Complex on the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. The competition schedule and further information can be found on usafieldhockey.com.

UPDATE (6/1/13): The Mid-Atlantic/South team won the Women’s National Championship title with a 4-2 victory over Pennsylvania. Michelle Vittese scored the fourth goal for Mid-Atlantic/South in the 44th minute.

On Friday, May 31, Michelle Vittese and Paige Selenski were officially named to the 30-player roster of the U.S. Women’s National Field Hockey Squad. The athletes selected to the U.S. Women’s National Squad will report immediately to Rutgers University to begin preparations for the International Hockey Federation’s World League Semi-Final in London, June 22-30. Parnham anticipates selecting the 18-player roster for the World Cup qualifying event the week of June 3rd.
