Six Cavaliers Honored as CRCA Scholar-Athletes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Six members of the Virginia rowing program, including graduate student Sarah Cowburn, seniors Molly Frear and Ann Reid and juniors Kaity McCullough, Sarah McGovern and Catherine Multari, have been named 2013 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Scholar-Athletes, the CRCA announced Tuesday (May 29).
The group of six matches 2008 for the most Cavaliers honored in a season. To be eligible, student-athletes were required to have a 3.5 cumulative GPA, be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility and rowed in her institution’s NCAA or IRA eligible boat for a minimum of 75 percent of the current spring races or race in a conference regatta.
Cowburn (Worcestershire, England) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III At-Large First Team earlier this month and was named to the 2013 CRCA All-South Region First Team. A member of the UVa Varsity Eight that was named ACC Crew of the Year, Cowburn was also recognized on the All-ACC squad.
Frear, (Wilton, Conn.) who was honored as a CRCA Scholar-Athlete for the second consecutive season, has been the coxswain for the Second Varsity Eight for the second half of the spring season and led the 2V8, which featured Reid (Midlothian, Va.) to an ACC title on May 12.
Varsity Four coxswain McGovern (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) led the V4, which included McCullough (Campbell, Calif.), to the ACC title, while Multari (Halifax, Nova Scotia) has been in the top four Cavalier boats throughout the season.
The Cavaliers open the 2013 NCAA Championships Friday (May 31) at Eagle Creek Park Lake in Indianapolis, Ind.
