Atlanta, Ga. – Virginia sophomore golfer Denny McCarthy finished the NCAA Championships in 22nd place after shooting 1-under 69 during the final round of stroke play. McCarthy turned in a 54-hole total of 2-under 208 at the Capital City Club in Atlanta. McCarthy played his final 36 holes at 4-under par.

McCarthy posted four birdies during his first 11 holes of the final round before posting bogeys on three holes down the stretch.

An All-ACC selection the past two seasons, McCarthy finished 77th at the 2012 NCAA Championships at the end of his freshman campaign.

California’s Max Homa won the NCAA individual title with a score of 9-under 201.

Homa helped the top-ranked Bears finish the stroke play portion of the tournament in first place at 16-under 824. They will be the top seed of the eight teams that advanced to the match play portion of the event that starts Friday. Also advancing to match play were Georgia Tech (830), Alabama (833), Texas (833), Illinois (835), New Mexico (842), UNLV (842) and Arizona State (842).
