CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Elon used a three-run, eighth-inning rally to defeat UNCW, 6-4, in an elimination game on Sunday (June 2) at the 2013 NCAA Charlottesville Regional before a crowd of 3,184 at Davenport Field.

Elon (34-29) plays Virginia (49-10), who is 2-0 in the regional, tonight at 6 p.m. The Phoenix must defeat the Cavaliers twice to advance to next weekend’s NCAA Super Regionals. A seventh game, if necessary, to determine the Charlottesville Regional champion is scheduled for Monday (June 3) at 6 p.m.

UNCW made its sixth NCAA Baseball Championship appearance and finished the season with a 38-23 record.

Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth, Elon’s Danny Lynch drew a walk off Christian MacDonald and pinch-runner Blaine Bower stole second and scored on Chris Bresnahan’s single to left off losing pitcher Justin Livengood. Quinn Bower followed with a single to left. Bresnahan and Quinn Bower moved over to second and third on Kelly Secrest’s wild pitch and scored on Alex Swim’s two-run single to center.

Casey Jones went 3-for-3 for Elon and Quinn Bower, Sebastian Gomez, Antonio Alvarez and Bresnahan added two hits each for the Phoenix.

Ryan Pennell (3-2) earned the win in relief, yielding one hit and one walk in two innings. Elon starting pitcher Dylan Clark went five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks. Andrew MacDonald took over for Clark in the sixth and didn’t allow a run in two innings of work.

Terrence Connelly drove in a pair of runs for UNCW and Luke Dunlap and Ryan LaGrange added two hits each. UNCW starting pitcher Blaze Tart pitched five innings, yielding three earned runs on eight hits and three walks. Christian MacDonald allowed one run on three hits in 2.2 innings.

UNCW led 1-0 in the first as Michael Bass doubled to left center to lead off the game and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dunlap.

Elon tallied two runs in the bottom of the second. Jones led off with a single, moved to third on Alvarez’s double down the left field line and scored on Chris King’s groundout. Alvarez then scored on Lynch’s single to left.

In the UNCW third, Matt Keeler drew a lead off walk and eventually scored on Connelly’s single to left. Dunlap doubled to left and Molinaro walked to load the bases. Clark got LaGrange on a flyout to right to end the inning.

The Seahawks loaded the bases in the fourth and scored one run to gain a 3-2 lead. Keeler started the rally with a two-out single and scored when Connelly was hit by a pitch.

In the fifth, LaGrange put UNCW up 4-2 when he laced a one-out double to left center and scored on Corey Dick’s double down the right field line.

Elon cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth as Gomez drilled a one-out double to left and scored on Alvarez’s RBI groundout.
