Porter Earns Second-Team All-America Honors in 10000m

EUGENE, Ore. – Virginia junior Thomas Porter earned second-team All-America honors during day two of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Thursday at Hayward Field. Porter placed 16th in the men’s 10000m as he made his NCAA Track & Field Championships debut.

Porter finished in a time of 30:14.96 to cross the line in 16th place. It was the best result for a Cavalier in the men’s 10000m since Michael Cotton was sixth in the event in 1981.

“Thomas capped off a successful track season,” said assistant coach Pete Watson. “He scored at the ACC Championships and then earned a second-team All-America slot. He made a lot of progress this year and I’m already looking forward to his cross country senior season in the fall.”

The Cavaliers will have two more athletes compete at the meet. Barbara Strehler is in the women’s 5000m on Friday (9:15 p.m.) and Mark Amirault competes in the men’s 5000m on Saturday (6:23 p.m. ET). Yesterday, Abbey Karin placed 19th in the women’s javelin.
