CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Three members of the Virginia rowing team have been named to the 2013 College Rowing Coaches Association Pocock All-America teams, the CRCA announced Tuesday (June 11). Senior Kristine O’Brien was named to the first team for the third consecutive season, while graduate student Sarah Cowburn and senior Susanne Grainger were recognized on the second team.

It is the 13th-consecutive season UVa has had multiple All-Americans and the 15th-straight year Virginia has had a member on the first team.

“Congratulations to Kristine, Sarah and Susanne,” UVa head coach Kevin Sauer said. “Kristine has been in our Varsity Eight all four years and therefore has been instrumental to our success over those years, including two NCAA team titles, the 2012 V8 championship and as a co-captain in 2013. Sarah and Susanne have also been very important to our V8 the past two years. All three have made tremendous contributions to our program and will be sorely missed.”

All three Cavaliers were a part of the Cavalier Varsity Eight that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships and helped UVa finish fifth in the team standings. They were also a part of the V8 that won the Atlantic Coast Conference title and clinched the Cavaliers’ fourth-consecutive team championship.

In 2012, the trio were members of the UVa V8 that captured the NCAA Championship and clinched the Cavaliers’ second team national title in three years.

O’Brien (Massapequa, N.Y.) was a member of the Varsity Eight for four years at the NCAA Championships and was the 2012 USRowing Fan’s Choice Collegiate Rower of the Year. The 2010 ACC Freshman of the Year was a three-time member of the CRCA All-South Region First Team, a three-time All-ACC honoree and a part of the V8 that won ACC Crew of the Year three times. Outside of UVa, O’Brien earned gold with the U.S. Women’s Eight at the 2012 World Under-23 Championships.

Cowburn (Worcestershire, England) earned All-America honors for the second year in a row after being named to the first team in 2012. Cowburn was named to the All-South First Team this season after earning second-team honors in 2012 and was twice recognized on the All-ACC squad and as a member of the ACC Crew of the Year.

Grainger (London, Ontario) was a part of the V8 that earned ACC Crew of the Year in 2012 and 2013 and was named to the 2013 All-ACC squad. A member of the 2013 CRCA All-South Region First Team, Grainger has earned gold medals at the last two World Under-23 Championships for Team Canada (Women’s Four in 2012, Women’s Eight in 2011).
