CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia volleyball head coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced the Cavaliers’ 2013 schedule Friday (June 14), which features 16 home matches, including two tournaments at Memorial Gymnasium.

The 2013 slate will see Virginia face eight NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago, including Florida State, North Carolina and Western Kentucky, which all reached the second round. The schedule includes matchups against three conference champions, including Colorado State (Mountain West), Florida State (ACC) and Western Kentucky (Sun Belt).

The Cavaliers will open the season by hosting a tournament Aug. 30-31, with James Madison, Marshall and Montana at Mem Gym.

“I think we have put together a very competitive pre-conference schedule,” Hohenshelt said. “I wanted to challenge our student-athletes right out of the block and I think the opening weekend’s tournament will do just that. We then hit the road for two consecutive weekends and will be challenged by some very good teams.”

Virginia will then travel to the West Coast to play in a tournament at Pepperdine Sept. 6-7, in Malibu, Calif., that will also include Colorado State and UC Santa Barbara. The following weekend (Sept. 13-14), UVa will head to Bowling Green, Ky., to play in a tournament against Ohio, UNLV and host Western Kentucky.

The Cavaliers return home to host another tournament Sept. 20-21, with Columbia, Seton Hall and William and Mary.

“I wanted to play one last weekend at home before we start our ACC schedule,” Hohenshelt said. “I am pleased that we were able to get Seton Hall, Columbia, and William and Mary to come to Charlottesville for that event.”

UVa opens ACC play with four road matches, including Duke (Sept. 27), Wake Forest (Sept. 28), Maryland (Oct. 4) and conference newcomer Pittsburgh (Oct. 5).

Virginia’s conference home opener is also against a new ACC foe, Syracuse, on Oct. 11. Matches against Boston College (Oct. 11), North Carolina (Oct. 18) and NC State (Oct. 19) round out a four-match home swing.

Notre Dame makes its first ACC trip to Mem Gym on Oct. 27 as the Cavaliers begin a five-match stretch against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams including Nov. 8-9 home matches against Florida State and Miami.

The Cavaliers’ final three matches will be home contests, facing Virginia Tech on Nov. 24 followed by Pittsburgh (Nov. 29) and Maryland (Nov. 30) on the final regular season weekend.

“The ACC has become a lot tougher with the addition of Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse to the schedule and we hope that the opening four weeks will put us in a position to be ready to compete for a conference title,” Hohenshelt said.

Prior to the regular season, the Cavaliers will hold the annual Orange and Blue scrimmage at Mem Gym on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 6 p.m. Admission to this event is free.
