INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—Former UVa swimming standout and Virginia volunteer assistant coach Matt McLean qualified for his second event at the 2013 FINA World Championships Friday (June 28) at the U.S. National Championships and World Championship Trials in Indianapolis, Ind.

McLean finished second in the men’s 400-meter freestyle in a career-best time of 3:46.14 and will compete for Team USA in the event at the World Championships, which will be held in Barcelona, Spain, July 28-August 4. His time of 3:46.14 ranks as the sixth-fastest mark in the world this year. On Wednesday, McLean qualified for the American team as part of the 4x200m free relay after finishing third in the 200m free.

McLean will look to add to his total of four international gold medals in Barcelona. The 2011 UVa graduate was a member of the U.S. 4x200m free relay at the 2012 London Olympics that claimed first and was the anchor of the same relay at the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships in December. At the 2011 World University Games, McLean won two gold medals – in the 200m free and the 4x200m free relay.

The Sterling, Va., native graduated with a degree in sociology and is one of UVa’s most decorated student-athletes. McLean won the 2011 NCAA Championship in the 500-yard freestyle and was a 15-time All-American at UVa. A 17-time Atlantic Coast Conference Champion, McLean was the ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
