PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Former Virginia men’s tennis player Michael Shabaz (Class of 2011) won his first professional championship in the United States by capturing the PNC Men’s Futures of Pittsburgh. It was Shabaz’s third career singles title on the Futures Tour, having won last year in Guatemala and India.

Shabaz, seeded No. 3 in the event, downed current Duke player Jason Tahir 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in Sunday’s final. It was the second straight week that Shabaz had reached the final of an event on the USTA Pro Circuit, having fallen to former teammate Jarmere Jenkins (Class of 2013) in the final of last week’s event in Rochester, N.Y.
