CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Six former Cavaliers will be competing this weekend in the World Rowing Cup III regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland, Friday through Sunday (July 12-14). The group includes 2013 graduates Sarah Cowburn and Susanne Grainger, Christine Roper (Class of 2011), Inge Janssen (Class of 2010), Kerry Maher Shaffer (Class of 2007) and former UVa softball and volleyball player Meghan O’Leary (Class of 2008).

Cowburn, the 2013 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year, is representing Great Britain in the women’s eight. Cowburn, a two-time All-American, was also named to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-America At-Large Third Team.

Grainger, a 2013 CRCA Second-Team All-American, and Roper, a 2011 second-team All-American, will row in the Canadian women’s eight against Cowburn. Roper will also compete in the women’s four. Also rowing for Canada will be Shaffer, who will compete in the women’s double sculls.

Janssen, who competed for the Netherlands at the 2012 London Olympics in the women’s double sculls, will compete in the women’s single sculls in Lucerne. She earned bronze in the event at the 2013 European Championships.

O’Leary won the women’s double sculls at the USRowing National Selection Regatta in May and will compete at the U.S. senior international level for the first time.

The World Rowing Cup regattas serve as a lead up to the World Rowing Championships, which will be held in Chungju, South Korea, Aug. 25-Sept. 1.
