CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Three former Cavaliers earned four medals at the World Rowing Cup III regatta, held in Lucerne, Switzerland, July 12-14. The four medals and six competitors were both record hauls for UVa in senior international competition.

“I’m extremely proud of these former UVa student-athletes as they represent their respective countries at the highest level on the world stage,” Virginia head coach Kevin Sauer said.

Class of 2011 graduate Christine Roper earned gold with the Canadian women’s four in a time of 6:34.58, while also taking home bronze with the women’s eight alongside 2013 graduate Susanne Grainger. The Canadian women’s eight finished in a time of 6:01.61, just ahead of fourth-place Great Britain, which featured UVa graduate Sarah Cowburn (Class of 2013).

Former Cavalier softball and volleyball player Meghan O’Leary (Class of 2008) earned bronze for the United States in the women’s double sculls in 6:45.29. Based on the third-place finish, O’Leary and teammate Ellen Tomek now have the opportunity to row at the World Rowing Championships in Chungju, South Korea, Aug.25-Sept. 1.

Two other former Cavaliers were in action, including Kerry Maher Shaffer (Class of 2007) and Inge Janssen (Class of 2010). Janssen, representing The Netherlands, won the women’s single sculls B final to finish seventh overall in a time of 7:33.79. Shaffer placed eighth for Canada in the women’s double sculls in a time of 7:02.53.
