BARCELONA, Spain—Former Virginia swimmers Matt McLean (Class of 2011) and Katya Bachrouche (Class of 2011) started action at the 2013 FINA World Championships Sunday (July 28) in Barcelona, Spain.

McLean, an Olympic gold medalist, placed 13th in the men’s 400-meter freestyle in 3:49.74, while Bachrouche represented Lebanon and finished 27th in the women’s 400m free in 4:20.46.

McLean will also compete for the U.S. in the 4x200m free relay on Friday (Aug. 2), looking for his fifth international gold medal. The Sterling, Va., native was a member of the U.S. 4x200m free relay at the 2012 London Olympics that claimed first and was the anchor of the same relay at the 2012 FINA Short Course World Championships in December. At the 2011 World University Games, McLean won two gold medals – in the 200m free and the 4x200m free relay.

Bachrouche, who will compete in the 800m free on Friday, competed for Lebanon at the 2012 London Olympics and won gold in the 200m free, 400m free, 800m free and 200-meter individual medley at the 2011 Pan Arab Games.
