CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Former Virginia women’s tennis student-athlete Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) was named assistant coach at George Washington, Colonials head coach Dawn Buth announced last week.

Fuccillo graduated from UVa this spring as a member of the most successful class in Cavaliers’ women’s tennis history after amassing 74 dual wins and making four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including three straight trips to the NCAA round of 16 from 2011-13.

During her final collegiate season, Fuccillo co-captained the Cavaliers to the NCAA Sweet 16 and a No. 15 final team ranking by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Over her four-year career with the Cavaliers, Fuccillo ranked sixth all-time at UVa in combined career singles/doubles wins (179), seventh in career doubles wins (92) and tied for seventh in career singles wins (87). She was individually ranked as high as No. 76 in singles and No. 16 in doubles.

“Maria is a great choice for the assistant coaching position at George Washington,” Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau said. “She will benefit the program and staff in every way imaginable. Maria has an incredible work ethic and is extremely responsible and reliable. We are very excited for her and the GW program, and we will be wishing them the best of success ahead. Maria will also further her academic progress as she works toward a graduate degree in education at GW. She is completely prepared to succeed in both roles and accomplish great things ahead.”
