TRAKAI, Lithuania—Virginia rowing incoming freshman Eliza Spilsbury (Kent, Conn.) won gold at the World Rowing Junior Championships, which concluded Sunday (Aug. 11) in Trakai, Lithuania. Fellow UVa first-years Joanna Gurman (Weston, Conn.) and Ali Zwicker (Victoria, British Columbia) also competed at the regatta.

Spilsbury was in the bow seat of the U.S. women’s four that won the A final in 6:53.85, holding off Italy (6:54.23) and Germany (6:56.29). Zwicker and the Canadian women’s four finished second in the B final in a time of 7:20.93 to place eighth overall.

Spilsbury joins rising seniors Brandy Herald and Elle Murray and rising junior Chandler Lally as Cavaliers who have won World Junior Championship gold medals in recent years. Herald and Murray were a part of the U.S. women’s eight that won gold in 2009, while Herald won the same event in 2008. Lally earned first place with the U.S. women’s four at the 2011 regatta.

Gurman was a part of the women’s double sculls for the U.S. that won the C final to place 13th overall in 7:19.70.
