CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team has been selected fifth in the 2013 ACC Men’s Soccer Preseason Coaches Poll, which was released Wednesday (Aug. 21) following a vote of the league’s 12 coaches.

Virginia received 106 points in the poll, coming in behind Maryland (142), North Carolina (122), Wake Forest (114) and league newcomer Notre Dame (110). Always a national power, the ACC figures to be as strong as ever this year with the addition of the Fighting Irish, Syracuse and Pittsburgh. Six ACC teams were ranked in the preseason NSCAA poll, while seven current league teams advanced to the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

The Cavaliers are ranked No. 14 in the preseason Top Drawer Soccer rankings and No. 25 in the NSCAA poll. Virginia posted a 10-7-4 record, including a 3-4-1 mark in the ACC, in 2012. Despite featuring a starting lineup which typically consisted of six freshmen and 10 underclassmen, the Cavaliers reached the second round of the NCAA tournament before falling 3-1 at No. 13-seeded New Mexico. UVa returns a wealth of experience, with 18 letterwinners and 10 starters returning from its 2012 side.

2013 ACC All-Freshman Team honorees Darius Madison (Philadelphia, Pa.), Marcus Salandy-Defour (Kensington, Md.) and Todd Wharton (Glen Allen, Va.) all are back in the mix for the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers also are bringing in a heralded recruiting class which has been tabbed as high as No. 2 nationally. The recruiting class features 11 freshmen and is highlighted by a pair of top-five recruits, Jordan Allen (Rochester, N.Y.) and Nicko Corriveau (Potomac, Md.). Sophomore transfer Jeff Gal (Bartlett, Ill.) also is part of the incoming group; he went 13-1-1 with seven shutouts last year at Creighton while leading the Blue Jays to the NCAA College Cup.

The Cavaliers opened their exhibition schedule Tuesday with a 2-0 win against Radford. UVa plays at Rutgers Saturday in its final exhibition tuneup before entertaining No. 10 Louisville on Aug. 30 in the regular-season opener.
