CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team will host William & Mary in a preseason exhibition game on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 3 p.m. at Turf Field.

The Cavaliers finished the 2012 season with a 16-6 record, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. William & Mary closed out 2012 with a 10-9 record.

Virginia will be led by three-time All-American senior Elly Buckley (Scarborough, Perth, Australia). Buckley was among the nation’s leaders in scoring, ending the year ranked 23rd with 0.77 goals per game and 23rd in points per game (1.86). Also returning is All-ACC goalkeeper junior Jenny Johnstone (Paisley, Scotland) who led the conference for most of the 2012 season in save percentage, ending the year with a .720 efficiency.

The Cavalier squad will also feature nine incoming first-year players including Lucy Hyams (Whitestable, Kent, England), a member of the England U21 squad that competed this year at the Junior World Cup in Mönchengladbach, Germany.Live stats will not be available for the exhibition game. Admission is free for the exhibition game and all regular-season field hockey games at Turf Field. Gates will open one hour prior to the competition.

The 2013 Virginia field hockey season officially gets underway on Friday, August 30 when the Cavaliers host Louisville at 6 p.m. at Turf Field. UVa closes out the opening weekend by hosting Penn State on Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. The Penn State game is also one of four contests during the regular season that will be streamed live online as part of the Cavaliers Live subscription package through VirginiaSports.com.
