Five Current and Former Cavaliers to Compete at US Open

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The Virginia men’s tennis team will have five current and former players competing in the main draws of the 2013 US Open, which begins Monday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) will compete in singles, while two pairs of Cavaliers, sophomore Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) and Jarmere Jenkins (Class of 2013), and Treat Huey (Class of 2008) and Dominic Inglot (Class of 2009), will compete in doubles.

With five players in the main draw of singles and doubles, Virginia has more players at this year’s US Open than any other school. The five players is also a school record for competitors in a Grand Slam event, breaking the previous record of three. This year’s US Open also marks the 18th consecutive Grand Slam tournament that a Cavalier has been in the main draw.

Jenkins and Styslinger received a wild card into the doubles draw as the reigning NCAA Doubles Champions. They will play No. 14 seed Michael Llodra and Nicolas Mahut of France in the first round. It will be the first US Open main draw appearance for both players.

Huey and Inglot, who reached the final of last week’s ATP event in Winston-Salem, are the No. 16 seed in the doubles draw and will meet Austrians Jurgen Melzer and Julian Knowle in the first round. Last year, Huey and Inglot reached the second round at the US Open.

Devvarman reached the main draw of singles after winning three qualifying matches last week. He will play Lukas Lacko of Slovakia in the first round. It is the fifth consecutive year that Devvarman has been in the singles draw in New York with his best showing a second round appearance in 2009.

Neither Devvarman, Huey/Inglot or Jenkins/Styslinger are on Monday’s schedule of play. All could potentially play their first round matches on Tuesday.
