Three Former Cavaliers Capture 2013 MLL Crown

CHESTER, Pa. – Three former UVa All-Americans helped lead the Chesapeake Bayhawks to the 2013 Major League Lacrosse (MLL) title at PPL Park, defeating the Charlotte Hounds, 10-9, to earn their second consecutive MLL Championship title.

Kyle Dixon (2003-06), Ben Rubeor (2005-08) and Kip Turner (2004-07) were also a part of the Bayhawks’ championship wins in 2012 and 2013. Turner was 14-for-22 in saves in the championship game versus the Hounds, earning a .636 save percentage.

Turner, a native of Annapolis, Md., set the tone for a low-scoring affair by making six saves in the first quarter. Due largely to Turner and the defense, Chesapeake became only the second franchise in MLL history to capture consecutive championships. Like the Philadelphia Barrage from 2004 to 2007, the Bayhawks have won three titles in the span of four seasons.

“It’s pretty special, it’s pretty awesome and it’s pretty rare. This is something I’m going to cherish and appreciate for a long while,” Turner said.

Turner, acquired in a trade with Boston, took over as Chesapeake’s starting goalie last season and now has two titles to his credit.

“It’s absolutely the best feeling ever. Nothing even comes close. To win a championship once is amazing, but to do it two years in a row is incredible,” Turner said.

While Turner joined the team in 2012, Dixon and Rubeor each have been with Chesapeake for the championships in 2010 and 2012 in addition to this year.

Dixon registered one assist in the championship game, while Rubeor had one goal and one assist.

Former UVa All-American goalie Adam Ghitelman (2008-11) saved nine shots in a losing effort for Charlotte. Other former UVa All-American’s that saw time in the game for the Hounds were Brian Carroll (2007-10) and Matt White (2010-13).
