CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia volleyball team opens up the 2013 campaign this weekend at Memorial Gymnasium with the Jefferson Cup against James Madison, Marshall and Montana. The Cavaliers open up the season against Marshall on Friday at 7 p.m. and face JMU and Montana on Saturday at 12 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.

The Dukes and Grizzlies face off Friday at 4:30 p.m., with the Thundering Herd and Grizzlies competing Saturday at 10 a.m. Marshall and JMU will play Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Fans who attend Saturday’s UVa football game against BYU can bring their ticket stubs and receive free admission to either of Saturday’s volleyball matches against James Madison and Montana (based on availability). Live stats for all six matches will be available through VirginiaSports.com.

Single-match general admission tickets are $5. Youth, senior and faculty/staff general admission tickets are $4 and group tickets (20 or more) are $3 per ticket. Fans can order tickets online at VirginiaSports.com and by phone through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office at 800-542-UVA1 (8821) or 434-924-UVA1 (8821). Tickets are also available at the gate beginning one hour prior to the start of each match.

Game-day parking for volleyball matches is available free of charge at the Culbreth Road Garage, located behind Carr’s Hill Field. Limited parking is available at the Central Grounds Garage (hourly rates apply).

UVa finished 2012 with a 9-22 record (3-17 in ACC play). Lone senior libero Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) leads a squad that returns 11 letterwinners and four starters. The Cavaliers have seven newcomers (six freshmen, one transfer) and boast the No. 12-ranked recruiting class in the country.

The Dukes ended 2012 with a 13-16 record and went 5-7 in the Colonial Athletic Association.James Madison returns five players who saw action in at least 25 matches last season. This will be the 48th meeting between the two schools with Virginia leading the series, 22-15, including a 3-2 win last year in Harrisonburg, Va.

The Herd finished 2012 with an 18-13 record, along with a 8-8 mark in Conference USA, but only lose one starter from last year’s squad. The Cavaliers lead the all-time series, 4-1, including a 3-0 triumph in a 2011 tournament at Ohio.

The Grizzlies went 6-23 in 2012 with a 4-16 record in the Big Sky, and return five starters. This will be just the second meeting all-time between the two schools. UVa won the first encounter, 3-1, in a tournament in 1996 at Pittsburgh.

Up next, the Cavaliers will travel west to play in a tournament hosted by Pepperdine Sept. 6-7. UVa will face Colorado State on Friday evening, before playing host Pepperdine as well as UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
