EARLYSVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams both opened the 2013 season with a pair of victories at the UVa Duals Friday at Panorama Farms. The Cavalier men and women both posted wins over Liberty and Radford in the first meet of the year.

The Cavalier men defeated Liberty (20-35) and Radford (17-38). Sophomore Kyle King (Yorktown, Va.) won the men’s 4K race, with redshirt-freshman Adam Visokay (Ruckersville, Va.), senior Chris Foley (Chantilly, Va.), sophomore Jack St. Marie (Westlake, Ohio) and senior Bryan Lewis (Roanoke, Va.) rounding out the scoring five.

“It was a good start to the season,” said men’s cross country coach Pete Watson. “We held out many guys who we will count on later in the season. It was a very controlled effort and a fun way to start the season. It was great to get the wins and hopefully we will chalk up a few more.

The women defeated both the Flames and Highlanders as the Cavaliers had the first five finishers across the line. Senior Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.) won the women’s 4K race, followed by junior Kathleen Stevens (Blacksburg, Va.), senior Vicky Fouhy (Buckinghamshire, England), senior Ariel Karabinus (Manassas, Va.) and senior Dena O’Brien (Pelham, Ala.).

“I liked how we competed and it was a good way to start the season,” said women’s cross country coach Todd Morgan. “We have been training well and treated this meet as a good workout session. We are excited for what this team is capable of and we look forward to rest of the season.”

The Cavaliers return to action on Sept. 28 as they host the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational.
