CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Virginia senior forward Elly Buckley has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week of the 2013 season after scoring a pair of game-winning goals in this past weekend’s action against Louisville and No. 6 Penn State.

Buckley accounted for three points in Virginia’s 3-2 season-opening win over Louisville on Friday with a goal and an assist. The Scarborough, Perth, Australia, native also recorded her sixth career defensive save versus the Cardinals.

In Sunday’s 4-2 victory over Penn State, Buckley’s game-winner was a shot she created by dribbling around PSU defenders, going half the length of the field to get down into the circle and then firing off a shot to score. Buckley finished with a pair of goals against the Nittany Lions to give her seven total points in Virginia’s two games.

This is the first ACC Player of the Week honor for the three-time All-American. The Cavaliers had a pair of players earn the accolade last season, including Paige Selenski who was the conference’s first Player of the Week of the 2012 campaign, and Michelle Vittese who earned the honor in October.
