Sugar Grove, Ill. – The Virginia men’s golf team finished the opening round of play at the Northern Intercollegiate in fourth place with a score of 1-over 289. Houston leads the 15-team field at 9-under 279 after the opening 18 holes of play at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill.

Freshman Jimmy Stanger led the Cavaliers during the first round by shooting 2-under 70 in his collegiate debut. Stanger is tied for seventh place. Junior Denny McCarthy is one shot behind him in 11th place while junior David Pastore is 19th at 72. Ji Soo Park shot 76 and stands 41st and Nick Tremps carded a round of 85 and is in 84th position.

McCarthy won the tournament last season for his first collegiate victory.

Kentucky’s David Snyder and Houston’s Blair Hamilton posted the best opening round scores of 5-under 67.

The second round of the tournament will be held Saturday and the final round is slated for Sunday.
