OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Virginia men’s tennis team began the 2013 fall season Friday as four players competed at the Olympia Fields Invitational, a clay court event at the historic Olympia Fields Country Club in suburban Chicago.

Friday’s play began with two rounds of doubles. The Cavalier duo of senior Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and freshman Jordan Daigle (Lafayette, La.) topped Kentucky’s Maks Gold and Ryugi Hirooka in the first round, 8-5, but lost 8-6 in their second match to the Texas pair of Sudanwa Sitiram and Jacoby Lewis. Sophomores Alex Scheinman (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Jonathan Cornish (London, England) defeated Notre Dame’s Billy Pecor and Eric Schnurrenberger 8-5 before falling to David Holiner and Lloyd Glasspool of Texas, 8-3.

In singles play, two of the four Cavaliers were victorious in the afternoon. Shane, who is ranked No. 117 in the preseason rankings, topped David O’Leary of Memphis 6-4, 6-0. Daigle posted a ranked victory in his collegiate singles debut, rallying for a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over No. 93 Sitaram.

The tournament continues Saturday and runs through Sunday.
