Charlottesville, Va. – Virginia men’s golf coach Bowen Sargent announced today the hiring of Jay Calvo as the program’s assistant coach. For the past four seasons, Calvo has been on the coaching staff at Liberty. He served as a graduate assistant for two years before being elevated to a full-time position prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.

“Jay brings a lot of energy and passion with him to our program,” Sargent said. “During his four years at Liberty, the program flourished, improving in ranking while advancing to the national championship several times. I think Jay will bring a new dimension to our program, one that recruits and student-athletes will have confidence in.”

During his tenure at Liberty, Calvo helped the Flames to three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Championships and a pair of Big South Conference team titles. Liberty captured its conference championship during the 2011 and 2012 campaigns and was the runners-up last season. The Flames made NCAA Regional appearances in 2011 and 2013 and advanced to the NCAA Championships in 2012, finishing 10th overall after winning the NCAA Regional in Greensboro, N.C. Liberty’s 2011 Big South title was the first in the program’s history.

Calvo worked with three Liberty golfers who captured the last four Big South Conference individual titles. Mathieu Fenasse was the 2013 Big South champion, while Robert Karlsson placed first in 2010 and 2012. Preston Dembowiak took Big South medalist honors in 2011.

During his playing days at Liberty, Calvo was a two-time Big South All-Academic team member (2008 and 2009) and was named to the Golf Coaches Association of America Scholastic All-America team in 2008.

On the course, Calvo finished his career with a 75.5 stroke average that led to five top-10 finishes. He helped Liberty capture four team titles during his four-year career for the Flames. He also was part of Liberty’s 2006 squad that received an at-large team bid to the NCAA East Regionals during his freshman season, where the rookie was among the starting five that participated at Lake Nona Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.

A native of Baird, Texas, Calvo was a four-year letterwinner at Baird High School. He graduated from Liberty in 2009 with a bachelor of science degree in sport management and earned a MBA from Liberty in 2011. He and his wife, Kayla, reside in Charlottesville.
